Black & White Digital

The streets of New York haven’t changed much since I started photographing over 40 years ago. There are still sirens, still the chaos, still the everyday rhythms. On Fridays, people still have more pop in their steps. And same goes for around the holidays. Fifth Avenue around Christmas is still massively crowded.
But then again, New York has changed a lot. A lot of chain stores are gone, restaurants. Everyone has a cell phone. During Covid lockdown, the streets were empty. And in some ways, the streets never recovered. I used to go out and photograph people dressed up for their offices. I loved photographing “suits.” It was like catnip for me. I rarely see a group of men in suits walking around. Did offices move? Are most people working remotely? Is the dress code more casual?
I still walk around looking for interesting faces and am always looking at the backdrop behind them. I anticipate a photo coming together, composing, responding. I try to take photographs that someone can be assigned to write a short story about.
I still love to photograph. It is like breathing for me.
